Our God is an awesome God
who reigns form heaven above!
With wisdom, power and might,
our God is an awesome God!
Today, we celebrate the 4th Sunday of Easter.
We’re 22 days into our celebration of the Resurrection.
We’re still rejoicing in what our God has done.
Our God is an awesome God!
Paul and Barnabas are on the road again,
traveling from one town to another,
working wonders
and proclaiming the resurrection
of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For some people
it’s unimaginable,
totally unbelievable.
Our God is an awesome God!
And even when Paul and Barnabas
are driven out of town,
the Good News is just so good
that they can’t help themselves
but to be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.
Our God is an awesome God!
But that was a long time ago
and in far distant lands.
But the Psalmist reminds us today
that we are God’s people, the sheep of his flock.
We are like those who were delighted
when they heard the Good News.
We gather here to glorify the word of the Lord,
just as the Gentiles did in Antioch in Pisidia.
Our God is an awesome God!
In the book of Revelation,
John has a vision of the future,
a future that has not yet come,
a future where there is a crowd so vast
that no one could count them,
a future where we are among those
who have survived the time of great distress.
We are among those who have washed their robes
and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
And today, we stand before God’s throne,
and we worship the Lord
and the Lamb who is in the middle of the throne,
because he has already led us to life-giving water,
and he was already wiped away every tear from our eyes.
Our God is an awesome God!
Jesus is the good shepherd,
and we are his sheep,
those who hear his voice.
He knows us, and we follow him.
No matter who we are or what we’ve done,
he knows us
and gives us eternal life.
Just as he rose from the dead,
he promises us we, too, will live forever.
The Risen One holds us in his hand,
and no one can take us out of his hand.
Our God is an awesome God!
Today, the Church rejoices to have a new pope,
Leo XIV,
a classmate of mine in the seminary,
Bob Prevost.
I never would have imagined
that someone I know would ever be elect Pope,
but today I rejoice
to see what God can do
in the world today.
Our God is an awesome God!
Today, we also celebrate Mother’s Day,
a day on which we give thanks to God
for all those women who have mothered us
with love and compassion.
Today we remember only their goodness,
we try to forget their imperfections,
and we call upon God to bless them
here and now
and into eternity.
Our God is an awesome God!
As we come to the table of the Lord today,
we have many things for which to be thankful.
That we, like the people of Antioch in Pisidia,
have heard the Good News of Jesus Christ.
That we, like the people in John’s vision,
are counted among those who will one day
stand before the throne of God.
That we are the sheep of Jesus’ flock,
that he knows us, loves us,
and promises us eternal life.
That we have a new Pope,
someone from our own homeland
to guide us into the future
as the Church of God gathered around the Table of the Lord.
That we have been blessed
with women in our lives
who have shown us the face of God
whenever they loved us, nurtured us,
comforted us and held us with tenderness and compassion.
Today, as we come to the Table of the Lord,
we have much to be thankful for.
Our God is an awesome God
who reigns form heaven above!
With wisdom, power and might,
our God is an awesome God!
