The image to the left is of the Assumption widow in the Chapel of the Assumption at St. Charles Center, Carthagena, OH where this homily was preached.

Our God is an awesome God
who reigns from heaven above.
With wisdom, power and might,
our God is an awesome God.

Today,
we celebrate that day
when Mary,
the mother of Jesus,
was assumed into heaven,
the first of many
to stand before the throne of God.

We rejoice that Mary is in heaven,
and we rejoice
because one day
we hope to join her there
when our bodies will be raised to new life
and we will gather with all the saints and angels
to praise our God forever.

Our God is an awesome God
who reigns from heaven above.

Every time we recite the creed,
as we will today,
we say,
“I believe in the resurrection of the dead,
and life everlasting.”

We profess our faith
that what happened to Mary
will one day happen to us.

With wisdom, power and might,
our God is an awesome God.

Today, we also honor the fact
that this chapel is dedicated
to the Assumption of Mary.

The largest window in this chapel
depicts an image of Mary being assumed
into heaven.

It is a beautiful piece of art
that reminds us of what God has done
for the mother of Jesus
and what God will one day do far all of us.

Our God is an awesome God
who reigns from heaven above.

Today, we also rejoice
with those Missionaries of the Precious Blood
who were incorporated into the community
on his date,
and we rejoice with all Missionaries of the Precious Blood
as we celebrate that day 211 years ago,
when St. Gaspar and three other priests
arrived at an ancient monastery
in Gianno de Umbria,
in what is now Italy,
to establish the Congregation
of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood.

Their faith in the God
who sent his Son
for the salvation of the world,
through the shedding of his blood
has inspired hundreds of men and women
who have dedicated their lives
to the preaching of the Good News
and the reform of the Church.

With wisdom, power and might,
our God is an awesome God.

Today, we have much for which to be thankful
as we gather around the table of the Lord.
Our God has blessed us in many ways,
and so we can cry out with Mary,
Our souls proclaim the greatness of the Lord;
our spirits rejoice in God our Savior…
the Almighty has done great things for us
and holy is God’s Name.

Our God is an awesome God
who reigns from heaven above.
With wisdom, power and might,
our God is an awesome God.
